You don't have to go!I
.
That's the thing about graduate school. Your parents (and the law) forced you off to grade
school, and for anything more than a life on minimum wage, you must finish high school. |

debt humanitiesIPh.D.'s barely
scraping by with part-time teaching gigs. And some
part of the income differential can be attributed to the personal ambition that pushes
people to sign up for graduate school in the first place. |
Without college, it begins to get difficult to afford that roomy
house in the suburbs with the two-car garage.
But graduate school? You just don't have to do it. So why go? Well, first off, there's the
ulcer-producing phrase "jobless recovery." If the economy continues to improve
without adding many new jobs, as some predict, workers will need to be more competitive
than ever to snag a position. And in certain fields, now might be the best time to add to
that résumé. "It's a great time to come to business school because applications are
down," says Marci Armstrong, associate dean of the Cox School of Business at Southern
Methodist University.
Increasing fees partly explain the slowdown, but stringent government policies on foreign
students have also shrunk the applicant pool in fields that have traditionally attracted
many overseas students. In areas like science, engineering, and economics, "the
competition may be a little easier," says Harvey Waterman, associate dean for
academic affairs for the graduate school of Rutgers University-New Brunswick.
And then there's the money. The lifetime income of those holding masters degrees surpasses
those who received only a bachelors by about $139,000 - while professional and doctoral
graduates earn $595,477 more than the bachelor's holders, according to the Employment
Policy Foundation, a Washington, D.C., think tank. But those figures can be misleading.
Just ask one of the many deep-in-

What's more, graduate school requires too much intellectual
rigor, spiritual fortitude, and financial commitment for students to be motivated solely
by future job prospects and a theoretical increase in lifetime income. For one thing, it
will consume at least one year of your life - and most likely more. Doctoral
candidates and future physicians face a combination of schooling and apprenticeships that
can last a decade or more. And these are years of work more demanding than
college ever was. Graduate school isn't the place for people who are trying to
"find themselves," either. You don't go to explore different career options or a
range of subjects. That's what college – and life – are for. If you're still
casting about for your life's goals, hiding-out on campus won't work. Take a stab at a
career or two – and then go to graduate school if and when inspiration strikes.
Perhaps you're thinking
that you can't possibly figure out the best place for your undoubted talents. But before
you rush into any decision, consider this: at this moment, before you make any commitment,
you have the opportunity to delve into any field that fascinates you. You can read about
all its interesting aspects, and all its enticing opportunities, on university Web sites,
in journals, and in books. And then you – not your parents, not your high school
guidance counselor, or anybody else who tells you that graduate degrees are good for you
– and only you can make the choice where to let your academic passions reside. |
